The 10 golden rules for communicating in the right way.

Brands that make media slips, companies that get lost in a teacup in the comments, public figures who shoot at random in live broadcasts.

What do all these cases have in common? They have the wrong way of communicating.

Everything is communicating, everything is communication.

Communication can be: verbal, non-verbal, para-verbal if we talk about the action itself; internal and external if we talk about brands and companies.

If you open the dictionary or go on google, under the word " communicate " you find:

co-mu-ni-cà-re (I co-mù-ni-co) from the Latin: communicare, put in common, derivative of commune, properly, which fulfills its duty with others, composed of cum together and munis office , assignment, duty, function.

Let's go even deeper:

Aware of one's responsibilities and strong in one's role, communication is a social expression , putting a value at the service of someone or something out of oneself: it's not enough to pronounce, write or draw to communicate; communication takes place when it arrives, when the expression is understood and becomes a common heritage for the construction of a discussion, of knowledge, of a culture.

Incredible, right? A definition that reminds us how important it is not to forget the goal of communication.

Let's see now, browsing or typing the word that begins with the "P". Got which one?

Right. The word " advertisement "

The Italian term advertising derives from the adjective and noun public , i.e. concerning the people, the population , and the origin of the Italian word reflects the purpose of informing the public and does not presuppose the parasitic or omnivorous nature of the term, but rather ethical and transparent .

But the most fascinating thing is the derivation from the Anglo-Saxon language, from " Advertising ", in fact.

Advertising has an entrepreneurial and persuasive connotation. Advertising derives from the verb to advertise, which in turn comes from the Latin ad-vertere and literally means to go towards .

Go to what? Towards the public , towards each other.

This is why I had you do this research and for the same reason brands, companies and public figures still in 2021 don't know how to communicate.

It is as if they have forgotten the basics of communication.

I understand that things with the advent of the Internet and social media have changed our society, that the people's courts have moved from the bar next door to groups on Whatsapp and the Facebook feed, but we must understand that, as Bruno says Mastroianni for Treccani :

" We have all become de facto little public figures for whom any online action (from posting a photo to writing a post or a comment) becomes an official declaration of our identity and our worldview, which is exposed to the others (potentially all the others) and therefore criticizable, commentable, reworked by them".

Frame it and put it in plain sight, because it must never be forgotten.

How do you communicate in the right way?

If we are all small communicators, think about how much this statement is amplified and important for a brand or company. Here's the reason why in 2021 you can't communicate online if you don't know the Manifesto of Hostile Words .

Parole Ostili , born in Trieste in August 2016. is a social project to raise awareness against the violence of words, with a very specific mission:

This manifesto is of unimaginable relevance , it was:

Translated into 32 languages, used and told to over 850,000 students and 170,000 teachers and officially signed by over 300 Italian municipalities, more than 20 companies and as many universities and declined in 8 areas including companies.

These are the 10 rules of the Manifesto :

1. Virtual is real

I know that every word online has real consequences and can make or break real relationships. I moderate my tone and value empathy, respectful listening and, where appropriate, humor. I am consistent and keep the promises made online.

2. You are what you communicate .

What I communicate reflects my values and identity and those of the company. I promote trust and transparency. I am loyal and intellectually honest with competitors. I take care of the quality of what I communicate as I take care of that of what I produce.

3. Words shape thought

I communicate simply and clearly, with the aim of making myself understood, and I take the time to do so. I avoid useless technicalities, I always give the necessary information. I know that my ideas will only be successful if I tell them well.

4. Before speaking you need to listen

Listening is independent of hierarchy: only by listening to others, colleagues, partners or customers, can I build a winning project for everyone. I facilitate communication. I answer questions, welcome criticism and use it to improve.

5. Words are a bridge

I find the right words, exciting, hospitable, inclusive, such as to create common ground and build valuable relationships. I try to know the reasons and interests of my interlocutors to understand their point of view and I'm willing to change mine.

6. Words have consequences

My words represent my company, they have weight and contribute to the creation of the collective imagination: I am aware of it and I take responsibility for it. I have the courage to respond to hostile attacks with kindness.

7. Sharing is a responsibility

What I share online affects my company's reputation and credibility. I select and evaluate sources and contents, I never spread false or confidential news, information and data. I respect privacy and protect security.

8. Ideas can be discussed

People must respect each other Discussing helps to grow. By discussing – even energetically – opinions and perspectives, I value the free expression of ideas, regardless of hierarchies. I always respect people, their diversity and multiculturalism.

9. Insults are not arguments

Aggression is the enemy of effective and constructive communication. Insulting is humiliating and sterile, and whoever insults only shows that they have no better arguments. I sensitize my collaborators to communicate in a balanced and non-hostile way.

10. Even silence communicates

There is a time to listen, a time to reflect, a time to respond. I know when speaking is better and when silence is better: keeping silent helps to give lucid answers at the right moment, and silence can also express value and strength.

This Non-Hostile Communication Manifesto for companies defines a few simple rules for a transparent and sincere dialogue between companies, customers and stakeholders (therefore applicable for online communication).

About 300 professionals have worked on it, those who do business communication and those who do political communication, influencers, bloggers, and finally also many teachers, students, entrepreneurs, professionals…

It is essential to learn and remember these rules for communicating: reputation is worth it, for my and your company, for our social profiles.
