A winning company? It is made up of collaborators, not employees.
A winning Company is made up of people who believe in the Entrepreneurial Vision
What makes a company unique and special ? People : internal/external Collaborators, Suppliers, Partners…
Financial and human capital are both essential.
Without human capital, finance is of little use.
It is evident that the person is the winning element of a Company .
The fundamental condition is that he feels like the creator of the company's success.
Let's start with some basic points.
We sell services, not products
Even when our companies sell lawn mowers, hair dryers, windows, etc. we don't just sell products, we sell services:
- Lawnmower: we expect it to work at its best and to cut the grass in our garden perfectly;
- Hair dryer: we certainly don't want our hair to burn at the first blow-dry, we want it silky, soft, shiny;
- Windows: they don't just have to close a space. They must insulate from heat and cold and keep noise away.
Every time we make a sale, we make a promise
When a customer purchases one of our products or services, they are placing their trust in our company.
“By purchasing this hair dryer, your hair will be softer and silkier than ever”
The sales stage is just great. On the one hand the one who sells. Willing to say anything. On the other, the buyer, who tries to figure out where the catch is.
I am absolutely not a sales expert, I deal with other things in life.
Over the years, however, I have made a very clear idea. I have only one name and one face to spend on the Market. My credibility is the only currency I can spend.
The promise must be kept
In making a sale, the Company brings into play an extremely important factor: its own credibility.
It is therefore important that the service we promise in the sales phase is actually delivered.
Have you ever been enticed by the beautiful photograph on the packaging of a snack and then discover that, in reality, it is totally different?
Perhaps, at least once, it has happened to you to book a holiday in a beautiful hotel, only to discover that the rooms are dirty and totally different from those on their website.
Or you've just picked up your dream car, and it stops after driving 500 meters from the dealership.
In these examples, something went wrong.
In the first case, the Marketing department got carried away = you won't buy those snacks anymore.
In the second case the person responsible for cleaning did not do his job carefully. = You will never go to that hotel again.
In the third case, the quality control manager forgot some procedure. = You will badmouth that brand and that specific car with your acquaintances.
These 3 examples serve to highlight the fact that the success of a company depends on all the people who contribute to the creation of its products and services. To keep the famous promise. Internal and external personnel, suppliers, partners, etc.
You're probably thinking "ok, but what does this have to do with the concept of Collaborators and Employees" .
We get there.
The two points that we see now do not refer to the contractual relationship, but to the state of mind experienced by the personnel who work in the Company. Basically the approach adopted by Management to manage the Company.
What does it mean to be an EMPLOYEE of a Company?
It means that you depend on someone else's decisions. That your life depends on someone else. That the serenity and well-being of your family depend on someone else.
You are essentially the "effect" of your role.
“ Whatever I do in the Company, my future, however, depends on someone else. ”
I find this kind of feeling unrewarding and challenging. You don't feel involved in the Company. You will then be led to "do your own" in order not to lose your job.
What does it mean to be a COMPANY COLLABORATOR?
It means "collaborating" to the success of the entrepreneurial project. Share mission and vision. It means actively participating in the development of the company's business, regardless of the role we have within that company.
The worker who does not tighten a bolt correctly can compromise the safety of a motor vehicle. The cleaner who does not do her job effectively can make the environment unwelcoming and healthy.
Basically we move from the management model based on a rigid hierarchical structure, called the Fordist model (after Henry Ford) to the management model called Toyotista (Toyota was the first to use it).
In this new model, the traditional hierarchy has been replaced by a more collaborative framework.
The factory becomes the real place for research and development: a place where workers from all departments, by pooling their ideas and skills, can participate in the design of new products, without the constraints of the old divisions. A new production model that has proved successful.
A collaborator feels rewarded, feels part of something bigger. He feels that his contribution is fundamental to the success of the company to which he belongs.
Conclusion
I believe that, if we want to create successful companies, it is the responsibility of Management (Owners, Chief Executive Officer, General Manager, etc.) to make all those who are part of the Company involved and co-responsible. Of course, words must be transformed into concrete deeds.
If a person is in the EMPLOYEE state of mind he will use terms like BOSS and OWNER. Inevitably he will think:
- they make money on my skin
- they pay me a pittance and drive around in nice cars
- for what they pay me, even if I make a mistake in registering an invoice and I don't discharge the VAT who cares, anyway with all the money they have
- i forgot to check the package before shipment, if it comes back they will pay for another shipment….
- with the cabbage that I stop 5 minutes after working hours
- other projects have started, let someone else take care of them, I already have my work to do and it's too much... for what they pay me then...
- I'm sorry, but it's not in my job, I take care of something else
If a person has these attitudes towards the Company, it is the MANAGEMENT's responsibility to change the state in which that person lives, making them the architect of the Company's SUCCESS.
At that point he will feel like a COLLABORATOR and the HEAD will become a REPRESENTATIVE, the one who has the responsibility of making the Company travel at full speed to create well-being for everyone.
The thought will magically transform into:
- What can I do to optimize working times?
- How can I improve production processes?
- What contribution can I make to the Company so that everything runs smoothly?
- I'm not going home until I finish this job
Some useful questions
- Do I want to be Head or Referent?
- Do I want to depend on the Company, or contribute to its success?
- Am I aware that if I don't do my job at my best, the Company could have problems and tomorrow, as a result, my "safe place" might no longer be so safe?
These are just a few considerations, which I hope will offer some food for thought
